The Therapeutic Art of Pottery: My First Pottery Class

Writer's picture: Loretta DsouzaLoretta Dsouza

Pottery, an ancient craft, has a way of calming the mind and fostering creativity. According to me, working with clay is not just an artistic endeavor—it’s a therapeutic experience that helps you slow down and focus on the moment.

Getting My Hands Dirty

My first pottery class was an adventure. I was handed a lump of clay and told to shape it into something. At first, I felt clumsy, but as I got the hang of it, the process became intuitive. There’s something uniquely satisfying about molding clay with your hands and watching it transform into a vase, bowl, or simple ornament.

Why Pottery is So Calming

Pottery forces you to be present. The tactile sensation of clay and the rhythmic movement of the wheel act as a meditative practice. To me, it’s like yoga for the hands. Each turn of the wheel and every adjustment you make brings a sense of calm and focus.

A Creative Outlet

What I love most about pottery is its limitless potential for creativity. From intricate designs to simple shapes, every piece tells a story. During one session, I crafted a small planter with imprints of leaves, which not only turned out beautifully but also gave me a sense of pride in creating something unique.

Why You Should Try It

To me, pottery is not just a hobby—it’s an escape from the chaos of everyday life. It’s a way to express yourself, connect with your inner thoughts, and create something tangible. Whether you’re a beginner or an artist, pottery offers something for everyone.
